About Your Windshield

The windshield of a modern vehicle does more than keeping the occupants safe from the wind, storm, debris and bugs. It is critical in ensuring the safety of the passengers in an unfortunate event of an accident. Properly installed windshields and auto glass adhesives and sealants prevent passenger ejection. Windshields also provide clear visibility to the driver to avoid any mishap and are an important part of the safety system of the vehicle. Windshields are also an integral part of the airbag system and provide roof-crush resistance.

Due to its importance and criticality, the auto manufacturers strive to make better windshields and other glass components. Advanced technology is put into use to make the suitable and sturdy glass for the vehicles which ensures the safety of passengers especially during a roll over accident.

Basic Information About The Type Of Glass Used in Auto Windshields

The glass that is used in creating the auto windshield and other glass components of the vehicle is commonly referred to as the “Safety glass”. Safety glass is designed in such a way that it can break into small spherical pieces at the time of a sudden impact. The small pieces of glass cannot cause severe injuries to the people.

The safety glass used in the windshields of the automobiles is a sturdy and clear type of glass material. It is composed of two layers of glass with a layer of plastic in between them. This plastic layer is a special form of plastic called as the PVB (polyvinyl butyrate). If the windshield gets damaged then the plastic layer holds the shattered pieces of glass and prevents them from scattering and causing injuries.

The role of a windshield to ensure the safety of passengers during accident

The windshield of any vehicle provides the kind of structural support to the vehicle. You will be surprised to know that in case of a front end collision, the windshield provides up to 45% of the structural integrity of the cabin of the vehicle while it provides 60% structural integrity in case of a rollover accident.

Because of these important functions of windshields, it becomes extremely important that you take proper care of this glass component of your vehicle and never compromise on the safety of the passengers. If you notice repairable or irreparable cracks on your windscreen then you should take the necessary action to have it repaired or replaced without much delay.
